We're partnering with an established technology business looking to appoint an Engineering Lead to help shape and deliver the next stage of its software development. This is a hands-on leadership opportunity for an experienced engineer who enjoys combining technical delivery with mentoring and developing others.

You'll take responsibility for a small engineering team, helping translate business and product requirements into well-designed, reliable software. Working closely with colleagues across engineering and product, you'll have the opportunity to influence technical decisions, improve development practices and maintain high engineering standards.

It's an ideal position for someone who wants to continue building software while taking greater ownership of technical direction and team development.

What you'll be doing

Technical Leadership

• Provide technical direction across the team's development activities.
• Remain hands-on with software development, contributing to the delivery of key features and improvements.
• Make pragmatic architectural decisions, balancing immediate requirements with longer-term technical considerations.
• Maintain high standards around code quality, testing, performance and maintainability.
• Support engineers with technical challenges, code reviews and design decisions.

People & Team Development

• Provide day-to-day leadership and support to a small team of software engineers.
• Help individuals develop their technical capabilities and progress professionally.
• Hold regular development conversations and provide constructive feedback.
• Encourage ownership, accountability and effective collaboration.
• Contribute to the wider development of the engineering function.

Engineering Improvement

• Identify opportunities to improve development workflows, tooling and engineering efficiency.
• Encourage the effective use of emerging technologies and AI-assisted development tools.
• Share knowledge and promote good engineering practices across the team.
• Help maintain a healthy balance between delivering new functionality and improving existing systems.

What we're looking for

• Strong experience as a Senior Software Engineer, Tech Lead, Lead Developer or Engineering Manager.
• A solid background in modern software development, particularly full-stack web technologies.
• Experience with technologies such as TypeScript, JavaScript, React, Node.js or Python.
• Proven ability to take ownership of technical decisions and software architecture.
• A hands-on approach, with a genuine interest in remaining involved in development.
• Experience mentoring engineers, providing technical guidance and raising engineering standards.
• Previous experience leading a team, ideally including some formal people-management responsibility.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• A pragmatic approach to problem-solving, with the ability to balance engineering quality against business priorities.

Desirable experience

• Experience working within a SaaS or product-focused technology business.
• Exposure to AI-enabled products or modern AI development tools.
• Experience working with established applications as well as newer technologies.
• An interest in continuous improvement and evolving software engineering practices.
