Reducing Labour Costs with a Global Remote Workforce

1 March 2024 By Liam Jopling

As remote work debates continue, could global remote hiring reduce labour and office costs enough to end mass-redundancy trends in the tech industry?

In Europe remote working increased from 5-12% during the pandemic in 2020.

As of February 2023, 25% of all workers in Germany are working remotely. Of these remote workers, 73.4% work in the tech industry.

Germany was voted the top country for fully remote working in March 2023, followed by Denmark and the U.S. The UK ranked 17th place, behind countries such as Slovakia, Belgium, France and Netherlands.

As remote work debates continue, the tech industry faces another concern: global layoffs. Could these issues become intertwined as a solution? Could remote hiring reduce labour and office costs enough to end mass-redundancy trends?

Global Layoffs

Throughout 2023, there were over 260,000 layoffs across the industry. Despite mass-redundancies, many companies seek ways to maintain productivity with streamlined workforces, leading to increased investment in outsourcing and remote working solutions.

Global payroll companies like Deel, Remote, and Papaya Global specialise in remote hiring and international payments. Since 2018, Deel has processed $5.5 billion in payments with over 150,000 workers hired.

To hire Berlin-based Senior Developer talent, salaries range from EUR 75,000-130,000 yearly with limited local talent pools. International markets expand access to English-speaking candidates globally.

The Benefits

  • Cheaper labour costs — Regions like Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and South America host skilled developers with lower salary expectations
  • Lower overhead costs by downsizing physical offices or reducing onsite benefits
  • Larger talent pool reducing search time dramatically
  • Access to specialists not commonly available locally

Time differences present challenges, though experienced remote workers employ workarounds through flexible schedules.
